Why did you choose to work for The China Navigation Company (CNCo)?

I have always had the ambition to work in the maritime industry as I come from a small island in Papua New Guinea (Bougainville) that is surrounded by beautiful marine life. CNCo and Swire Shipping is a reputable company in the shipping industry both in PNG and globally. Joining CNCo has allowed me to work with a global team, develop my skills and share my experience with a wonderful HR team.

How has CNCo provided you with opportunities/ career progression? Describe your career path. Where did you start and how did you get to where you are today?

In my one year in CNCo, I was given many wonderful opportunities to upskill, through training, coaching, conferences and better self-awareness (seeing what approach works best for me and my team). I have also been involved in projects with our global HR team, which has been enjoyable journey and provided me with a good learning experience.

What’s your job scope & what do you do on a daily basis? Do you enjoy what you’re doing and what do you find most rewarding about your work?

In a nutshell – recruitment, training, payroll, onshore safety, staff well-being and overall providing HR advice and support to both staff and the management team. I enjoy helping our staff grow/develop both personally and professionally.

What advice do you have for people who want to be in this industry?

Have a learning attitude (growth mind-set) towards your work and others, read a wide variety of books/magazines to keep up with new trends and challenges/ opportunities, and surround yourself with good people (family, friends, colleagues) who help bring the best out of you. Believe in yourself and very importantly, trust your instincts! :)
